The Association of Wisconsin Area Kodály

The Kodály Concept is a philosophy and method for teaching music.  Basic principles include:

o        Music is for EVERYONE and is necessary for healthy human development.  Every person has the potential to make music.

o        Singing is the basis for all musical learning and solfege is the key tool to developing the inner musical ear.

o        Folk songs are the primary source material for beginning music education.

o        The goal is to make every child musically literate.  Each student will learn to read, write, compose, and improvise music at his/her own developmentally appropriate level.

o        Only the best quality of music instruction will do for children.  This includes using the best quality of musical material and highly trained instructors.

o        A carefully planned sequence of musical concepts leads to musical understanding.
